THREE-MINUTE SALSA

Photo, video, and words by The Bukit List

We love Bali—the beauty, the spirituality, the people…and you can get a damn great feed here, too. In fact, the food options are becoming more plentiful and diverse by the minute, but there are still a handful of things you might be missing if you’re not from here and you’ve been on the island for a while.

And, if you happen to be from North America or South America, then you might really be missing salsa. We’re talking about the condiment, btw.

Anyway, we have the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incan civilizations to thank for this yummy sauce, and it’s one of the tastiest dips on the planet in our humble opinion.

We’ve searched far and wide for good salsa on the island with the right flavor combo of spices, but we haven’t been 100% satisfied. One of us is a native Californian—as you can imagine, good salsa is really important. So one day, out of sheer desperation, we decided to make it ourselves.

Guess what? It’s remarkably easy to do, so this unnecessarily long tribute is dedicated to this super simple salsa recipe that we came up with on our own:

What you’ll need (for 6-8 servings):

  • A food processor or blender. For our Indo readers, we used a Cosmos Food Processor that costs around 250k Rp (not a sponsored post—we just love a good deal).
  • 5-6 medium tomatoes, chopped (~15k Rp)
  • 1 small red chili pepper (if you don’t like your salsa too spicy, add the chili pepper in little slices at a time. Remember, 1 small chili goes a LONG way) (~1k Rp)
  • 1/2 of a small-medium onion, chopped (~3k Rp)
  • A handful of fresh cilantro (~1k Rp)
  • Juice of 3 limes (~5k Rp)
  • 2 tsp cumin (do not leave this out — it MAKES it) (> 1k Rp)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (> 1k Rp)
  * (total cost for ingredients: ~25k Rp)

Put all this stuff in your food processor or blender, give it a quick zap, and serve. This recipe should give you around 2 cups of salsa depending on how big your tomatoes are. If you live in Bali then you probably already know that’s a medium sized jar’s worth which would cost you around 100k Rp. For crappy, imported salsa that’s full of preservatives and not even remotely fresh.

Once you have your salsa, all you need are some good tortilla chips. Cornitos are our favorite local brand (again, not a sponsored post—we just want to make sure you’re eating good chips with your fresh and amazing salsa).

Now, get off the internet and make some salsa for you and your friends. Then, go make yourself a dang quesadilla!
